Thirteenth Child

Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede is Little House on the Prairie with magic.

This is one of those books that makes me feel at home. It has a great blend of slice of life, mystery and character growth. I love the characters, the world and the magic system. It’s an exceptionally well rounded book and I have read it multiple times.

It seems almost cliché how often books show orphans and broken families. Which makes this book stand out that much more.

I really resonate with the supportive (yet imperfect) family portrayed here and many of the all too normal conflicts they have to deal with. I can’t tell you how comforting I find it, that in such an amazing and fantastic world, people are still dealing with the same struggles I do in my daily life. The normal things really help ground this book and set it apart from so many others.

I’ve sat down to write to you several times in the past three weeks. And every time I’ve gotten discouraged and left the task incomplete.

Sometimes I don’t know what to write. More often than not, I overestimate people’s apathy. But beyond all that, I’ve realized I shouldn’t write on an empty stomach.

So, this is me, writing to you having just finished my Oreo’s and milk. 😂

Remember to take care of yourself. Small things make a big difference.
